With rain in the forecast, now is the time to ensure your sump pump is in good working order.
Checking your sump pump regularly is important to prevent basement flooding. Here’s how you can test it:
1. Inspect the Power Source
- Ensure the sump pump is plugged in and the outlet has power.
- If your pump has a battery backup, check that the battery is charged.
2. Manually Lift the Float
- Locate the float (the part that rises with water).
- Lift it gently—this should activate the pump.
- If nothing happens, the pump might be clogged, broken, or disconnected.
3. Pour Water into the Pit
- Fill the sump pit with a bucket of water until the float rises.
- The pump should turn on and drain the water.
- If it doesn’t, check for blockages or electrical issues.
4. Check the Discharge Line
- Ensure the pipe carrying water away from your house is clear of debris.
- In winter, check for ice blockages.
5. Listen for Unusual Noises
- Grinding, rattling, or loud humming could indicate a failing motor or debris inside.
6. Test the Backup System (if applicable)
- If you have a battery backup or water-powered backup, test them separately by unplugging the main pump and simulating a power outage.
If your sump pump fails any of these tests, it might need maintenance or replacement. It’s best to check it every few months and before heavy rain seasons!
